MWDI Wood Duck Box Help - April 5, 2008 by Jeff Plummer Many of you have asked me "how can I help the MDWFA?" Well we are a partner with the Maryland Wood Duck Initiative, which practices education and conservation efforts for the Wood Ducks here in Maryland. Cliff Brown runs the MWDI and is looking for some volunteers on April 5th. One thing I can attest to is that if you commit to one of these volunteer efforts you will find it extremely rewarding and informative. We have many members who regularly participate in building, placing and monitoring wood duck boxes. They went one time to an event and got hooked. So read the info below on the opportunity to get involved and contact Cliff Brown directly if you would like to help on that day. From Cliff Brown, Maryland Wood Duck Initiative (MWDI): Folks, Seeking volunteer participation: Saturday April 5th. The MWDI has been asked to participate in this event which will feature about 75 kids of all ages and families. Recreation will be archery, trap shooting & fishing. Deer management among other things. MWDI will make a brief presentation to 6 groups of 8-12 kids each, will have them sort thru nest materials to count membranes and then have each group make a box. I have 25 kits which are partially assembled to simplify things. The event runs from 9-3pm, lunch is served. We would need to be there 7:30-8am. Izaak Walton chapter will be seeking a few volunteers (they manage a portion of the Mckee Beshers wood duck program as well as the Tridelphia and Lake Needwood programs) but I did not want to run short. We need 4-5 volunteers in addition to me. Participation can be for any length of time, I just need to coordinate it. Location is 18301 Waring Station Rd, Germantown, MD. My cell is 703-447-5142. Tools - helpful to bring a couple of hammers and a battery powered drill. Thank you for your consideration. Cliff Brown |
